“We’re not sure,” replied Cherry. She wore cute, sequined overalls that made her long legs seem even longer. The look was accentuated by white platform sneakers. “But that’s what we came to talk to you about.”

“What happened?” asked Olivia. “Cute outfit, by the way,” she added to Cherry.

“Well,” began Amanda. “Kathy finally showed up today. But get this.” She lowered her voice, glancing around. “Kathy came into the convention, but she was with that biker dude.”

“What?” I exclaimed.

Amanda nodded quickly. “It was the same guy who had an argument with Dave the day before he died. It’s got to be him. Same bald head, same tattoos. And it wasn’t just a quick chat. He stayed with Kathy for a while.”

“Okaaaay, so Kathy knows someone who has an affinity for leather and tattoos,” said Chad. “But I like both those things, and that doesn’t connect me to a murder.”

“But did you get into a huge fight with Dave the day before he died?” Cherry asked in a small voice.

Amanda adjusted her glasses. “What if Kathy hired him to off Dave? What if he’s her hit man?”

“Pretty dumb to bring your hit man back to the scene of the crime,” chimed in Chad. “Then again, humans can be dumb.”

“What?” Cherry cocked her head.

“He means people,” I corrected quickly. “He’s from Hungary, and English is his second language.”

“No, I’m not—oof,” gasped Chad when I dug my elbow into his side.

“The point is, maybe we should track down Kathy. Ask her about this guy. Maybe it’s a misunderstanding,” I said.

Cherry and Amanda gave each other another glance. “If you want to poke that particular hornet’s nest, be my guest,” said Amanda. “I personally do not want to anger anyone who might know someone in a biker gang.”

Well, I wanted to find out who killed Dave. And it wasn’t that I didn’t care if I attracted the notice of a potentially scary biker guy, but that I knew that I could survive if I did. Being friends with a cop did have its benefits, after all. And while my magic wasn’t exactly great, a few weeks ago, I was able to successfully survive an attack from our friend Maribeth’s assailant.

“Yeah, I’m not sure asking questions is a good idea, Carly,” said Olivia.

“Fine, I can go by myself. It might be better if I talk to Kathy alone anyway. I’ll be back.”

So, with the bit of courage I could summon, I walked across the convention floor to Kathy’s space where she was standing near her quilt. Her face was pale, and she wasn’t wearing any makeup. She had a small trash can near her stall, which I thought was odd, but didn’t give it much consideration.

“Hi, Kathy,” I greeted.

She gave me a brief nod. “Today’s not a good day for conversation,” she said.

Is it ever?

“Then I’ll be brief.”

Kathy blinked at me. She wore blue jeans with a simple t-shirt, and her bright blue hair was tied up in a ponytail. “Fine.”

“Look, everyone has been wondering where you were the night of Dave’s murder.
